The Montvales present their new album Path of Totality at The 04 Center, with special guest Nathan Evans Fox.
The Montvales bring their new album Path of Totality to The 04 Center on Wednesday, August 12. The Cincinnati-based duo is made up of longtime friends Sally Buice and Molly Rochelson, who got their start as teenagers busking on Market Square in Knoxville, Tennessee. The record was produced by Eli LoPinto, who has worked with Chris Stapleton, and it's an indie country album of 12 introspective, sonically layered tracks. The songs draw on the tradition of radical country and folk artists, as well as the duo's passion for literature and storytelling.
Those stories follow archetypal characters. In "Plains of Ohio," a woman tries to save her community from a gas pipeline; in "Our Lady," a grandmother travels to Yugoslavia in search of the Virgin Mary. The album's narratives are built around these kinds of figures, and the songs are written with a focus on the storytelling that's always been part of the country and folk tradition.
Opening the night is special guest Nathan Evans Fox, an Americana and folk musician from Glen Alpine, North Carolina. His music blends bluegrass, folk, and gospel with religious imagery and a bit of wit; he wrote, performed, and produced his first album, Home, in 2017. Between the two acts, the bill covers a fair stretch of the Americana spectrum, from the duo's indie country to Fox's bluegrass-inflected folk.
