Concert by the supergroup Drink The Sea, featuring Peter Buck of R.E.M., Duke Garwood, Alain Johannes and Barrett Martin, blending world music influences with rock.
Drink The Sea play The 04 Center on Saturday, September 12, with doors opening at 7 PM and the show starting at 8 PM. It's a supergroup that pulls from a few different corners of the 90s: Peter Buck of R.E.M., Duke Garwood, Alain Johannes of Eleven, and Barrett Martin, who played in Screaming Trees and Mad Season. Lisette Garcia joins them on stage as well.
The project started in 2022 when Johannes and Martin first jammed at Martin's studio in Olympia, Washington. From there, the band's first two albums were recorded around the world, with production and mixing moving through Reykjavik, Sao Paulo, Joshua Tree, Santiago, Olympia, and Barcelona. They took their name from a lyric Duke Garwood wrote.
What they're playing carries a strong world-music influence. They layer Arabic oud, Indian sitar, and Indonesian gamelans over traditional guitar, bass, and drums, and they bring in percussion like Brazilian surdo, frame drum, vibraphone, marimba, and kalimba. It's a wide reach for one stage—oud and sitar alongside a standard rock rhythm section, with the percussion filling in the gaps. The lineup brings together musicians who were key parts of some of the biggest bands of the 90s, each coming from a different scene.
