The Misfits: 65th Anniversary!

The Paramount Theatre is screening The Misfits on Thursday, August 13, as part of the film's 65th anniversary. It's a single-feature screening of the movie, which first came out in 1961.

If you haven't seen it, The Misfits is the final film Clark Gable ever made, and it's famous for bringing together some of the biggest names of the era: Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and Montgomery Clift. It's a story about a group of people on the fringes of a Nevada town, and it's known as much for the performances as for the writing, with a screenplay by Arthur Miller. Seeing it on a big screen is a different experience than catching it on a TV at home, especially for a film that relies so heavily on the chemistry between its leads.

The venue is the Paramount Theatre on Congress Avenue in downtown Austin. It's the city's oldest surviving theatre, built in 1915, and it's a City of Austin and State Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It started as a vaudeville and variety house and is one of the few remaining 'hemp houses' in the country. These days it draws more than 200,000 people a year and is a regular spot for SXSW and the Austin Film Festival, and it's also home to the Moontower Comedy Festival.
