A night of cover songs, original songs, live band karaoke, punk rock bingo and drum battles presented by English Teeth.
English Teeth bring The Dumbest Show on Earth to Hole in the Wall on Friday, September 25. Billed as "the last Friday of the month," the night is a loose mix of cover songs, original songs, live band karaoke, punk rock bingo, drum battles, and who knows what else.
It's a wide net to cast for one night, and the title doesn't hide the intent. Between the karaoke and the bingo, it's as much about the room as it is about the stage. The drum battles put the percussionists out front, and the covers and originals run side by side, so you'll hear things you recognize mixed in with the band's own material. The whole thing is presented by English Teeth, who handle the music and the hosting.
There's a bit of history to the room, too. Hole in the Wall opened in 1974 as a folkie hangout and served as a favorite stage for Townes Van Zandt, Nanci Griffith, and Blaze Foley before it became a breeding ground for punk, cosmic country, and alternative, launching the careers of Timbuk3, Fastball, Spoon, and Shakey Graves. The historic two-stage room still holds a couple hundred people and stages live music every night; it shuttered briefly in 2002 and came dangerously close to being priced out in 2015. This night keeps that tradition of live music going on a Friday.
