The Blues Specialists perform their traditional Texas jump blues and soulful vocals at The Continental Club, part of their long-running Friday happy hour series.
The Blues Specialists are playing The Continental Club this Friday, October 16, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. It's part of their longtime Friday happy hour at the club, a residency that's been running since January 1988.
The band is an Austin institution, founded by East Austin blues legends T.D. Bell and Erbie Bowser, whose partnership went back to the 1940s before they reunited to revive traditional Texas blues for a new generation. Now in their 36th year, the group carries on that legacy under the leadership of longtime member and original figure Mel Davis. They keep alive the jump blues, swing, and T-Bone Walker-inspired sound that helped define the city's East Side blues tradition—Walker influenced Bell and is a cousin of Davis.
On stage, the lineup is Mel Davis on vocals, harmonica, and sax; Lawrence Bell on organ and bass; Rob Richardson on guitar; and Isaac Bratchett on drums. Between them, they have well over 200 years of combined experience, and the set leans on authentic Texas jump blues and soulful vocals rather than flashy solos or modern blues-rock. It's a sound that points back to the East Side tradition they've spent decades maintaining.
