Grammy-winning jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard and his collective the E-Collective perform live at the ATX Jazz Fest at Assembly Hall.
Terence Blanchard and the E-Collective play Assembly Hall on Friday, April 2, as part of the ATX Jazz Fest. It's the opening night of a three-day run that goes through April 4, with the festival split between Assembly Hall and the Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park.
The fest is put on by ATX Chamber Music and Jazz, and they're billing it as the most concentrated gathering of jazz talent ever assembled in Texas, bringing together Grammy winners, MacArthur Fellows, and NEA Jazz Masters. Blanchard is one of the big names leading that charge. The E-Collective is his ensemble, and they're the ones taking the stage on Friday night.
Assembly Hall is a converted East Austin venue at 1121 E 7th St, about a mile and a half from the Moody Amphitheater. It's got polished concrete floors, 16-foot ceilings, arched windows, and exposed steel beams—the kind of room they describe as being built for close-range listening. That's a good thing for a night like this, where you're not just watching from the back of a big hall.

One thing to keep in mind: this particular night is reserved exclusively for Platinum VIP pass holders. If you've got one, you're set. If not, you'll want to look at the rest of the festival's schedule across the weekend. The fest runs from April 2 to 4, with the Moody Amphitheater handling the other half of the programming.
