Film industry satire Sullivan's Travels (1941) screening at AFS Cinema, presented on 35mm as part of the 'Essential Cinema: Four by Preston Sturges' series.
AFS Cinema is screening Sullivan's Travels on Tuesday, July 21 and Saturday, July 25, both at 7:30 PM. It's part of their Essential Cinema: Four by Preston Sturges series, so if you're into old Hollywood, this is one of the big ones they're working through.
Sullivan's Travels is writer-director Preston Sturges' masterpiece, a philosophical meditation on why comedy matters in our lives. Joel McCrea stars as a filmmaker who's lost his way, and Veronica Lake is right there with him. Critics have described it as madcap, melodramatic, suspenseful, gentle, tragic, silly, sincere, and ironic all at once—a lot to fit into one movie. They've also noted that it departs wildly from Sturges' usual screwball comedies, while still feeling like his funniest work. It runs an hour and a half, and it's presented on 35mm, so you'll be seeing it on film rather than a digital transfer.

There are also discounts for AISD educators and local high school and college students at the box office with a valid school ID. The cinema is at 6406 N I-35 Suite 3100 in Austin, and both screenings start at 7:30 PM.
