A workshop guiding artists on how to create, organise and maintain an effective studio space, covering lighting, ergonomics and storage solutions.
Lindsey Millikan is leading a workshop called Studio Smarts: Designing a Studio That Works for You at the Dougherty Arts Center on Tuesday, August 25. It's a session for artists on how to set up, organize, and maintain a studio that actually supports the way you work, whether you're carving out a corner at home or working in a commercial space. It's open to artists of all levels, so you don't need to be mid-career or have a dedicated building to get something out of it.
Millikan covers the practical side of the studio that often gets overlooked until it becomes a problem. She'll go over best practices for lighting and ergonomics—the kind of things that keep you from straining your back or squinting at your work—and how to organize and file your artwork so you can actually find it. There's a focus on creative storage solutions and how to balance technology with your physical tools, with the overall goal of helping you work more efficiently and sustain your practice over the long haul.
Millikan is an Austin painter and muralist with an MFA in Painting and a BFA in Studio Art and Fine Art Painting. Her work blends fine art and public practice to explore transformation, resilience, and social themes like climate justice and community health, and she's created work for national organizations and city projects. In her workshops, she helps participants build skills, find their creative voice, and engage meaningfully with their communities.
