A night of prog, fusion and free jazz featuring the instrumental art rock supergroup Stop Motion Orchestra, funk/fusion band Dodo, and the debut of pedal steel group Abba Zabba.
Stop Motion Orchestra are putting together a night of prog, fusion, and free jazz at VINYL Beauty Bar on Saturday, September 19. They're the main feature and the ones organizing the whole thing, so the evening is built around their sound. They're an instrumental art rock supergroup, and they've got two other acts joining them on the bill.
One of those is Dodo, a funk/fusion band led by Sam, who you might know from Nolan Potter & Bernardo Mountainair. The other is Abba Zabba, a pedal steel group making its debut. There's a connection running through the lineup: Abba Zabba is the new project of pedal steel guitarist Bob Hoffnar, who also coproduced Stop Motion Orchestra's upcoming album. So the night brings together the band's latest work and the debut of a project from one of the people who helped shape it.
Between the three acts, the bill covers a fair bit of ground. You've got the art rock of Stop Motion Orchestra, the funk and fusion of Dodo, and the pedal steel of Abba Zabba, all under the prog, fusion, and free jazz banner they've put on the night. It's a lineup that leans toward the instrumental side of things, and with the new album and the new project both in the mix, there's a good amount of new material to hear.
