Nakia & The Never Not Now headline The Continental Club on Saturday, August 22, as part of Late Nite Pride. The night is presented by Stay Out ATX and falls under Keep Austin Pride's 'after dark' programming, which brings together queer artists, live music, and the creative community at the South Congress landmark. Joining them on the bill is Como Las Movies.
Nakia & The Never Not Now is led by Austin artist and advocate Nakia, a The Voice Season 1 semifinalist. The band plays synth-soaked soul with blazing guitars and soaring harmonies. Como Las Movies is an Austin indie cumbia-pop project fronted by Nelson Valente Aguilar, an Austinite by way of McAllen, Texas. He describes his 'Nuevo Wave' sound as drawing on Pan-Latin rhythms, electronic textures, and pop influences.
The Continental Club, often called 'The Granddaddy of all local music venues,' has been Austin's premiere live-music club since 1955. It's a spot that's earned a coast-to-coast reputation over the decades, and this particular night fits right into its long history of hosting the city's live music scene.
