A queer variety show with comedy, burlesque, dance, aerial, and music, presented by Thee Gay Agenda, set in a fictional gay high school.
Thee Gay Agenda is bringing Slayed by the Bell: A Queer Variety Show to the Paramount and Stateside Theatres on Saturday, November 7. It's a queer variety show that pulls from a few different worlds at once: comedy, burlesque, dance, aerial, and music, all on the same bill. The whole thing is presented by Thee Gay Agenda, a queer art collective that's been staging shows in Austin since 2019.
The production is built around a specific setting: Marsha P. Johnson's School for the Sexually and Genderly Gifted, also known as Gay High. That school theme carries over into the crowd, too—the organizers are inviting everyone to turn up in their best gay school uniform, with Clueless, Ferris Bueller, and Mean Girls as the suggested starting points. If you've got a plaid skirt or a preppy blazer in the back of your closet, this is the night to bring it out.
As for the show itself, it runs in two acts with an intermission in between, so there's a bit of a break to stretch your legs and talk about the first half before the second one kicks in. It opens with an original short film made by the collective, which sets the stage for the variety acts that follow. The whole evening is presented with ASL and Spanish-language interpretation, so it's accessible to a wider crowd.
