Scenes from Mozart's operas staged by the Butler School of Music to celebrate his 270th birthday.
Mozart Everlasting runs Wednesday and Thursday, December 2-3, at the McCullough Theatre, with the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music presenting scenes from three of Mozart's operas: Così fan tutte, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), and Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro). It's a celebration of Mozart's 270th birthday, staged by the Butler Opera Center, and since it's a student production, you're seeing the school's singers and musicians rather than a professional touring company.
That's the core of the program: scenes from three of his most famous operas, Così fan tutte, Die Zauberflöte, and Le nozze di Figaro, all staged by Beatrice Huang and Madison Jackson. Instead of a full opera, you get a curated selection of moments from across his operatic output, which makes it a good way to hear his range in one sitting without committing to a four-hour production. The Butler Opera Center is behind the staging, and the whole thing is presented by the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music at UT Austin.
It's billed as a celebration of Mozart's 270th birthday, and given that the school is right here in Austin, it's a local take on a composer who's usually the domain of the big opera houses. The McCullough Theatre is on the UT campus at Robert Dedman Drive and E. 23rd Street, so it's easy to get to if you're already around the university. There are four wheelchair seats available for each performance.
