Beginner-friendly workshop to assemble and solder a unique mushroom stained glass suncatcher, presented by ContraCommon.
ContraCommon is hosting a stained glass workshop at Meanwhile Brewing Co. on Tuesday, August 11, from 6 to 9 PM. It's a three-hour class led by Deke Cameron, who goes by The Glass Clown. The project is a mushroom-shaped stained glass suncatcher, and it's designed for beginners.
Since the glass comes pre-cut, you don't have to worry about the trickiest part of the craft. You'll spend the session assembling the pieces and soldering them together, picking up the basics of lead-came construction along the way. Once it's finished, you can hang it in a window as a suncatcher or set it into the ground as a garden stake. The class is open to anyone 14 and older, and minors need to be accompanied by a participating parent or guardian.
Cameron is a local stained glass artist and teacher, a member of the Austin Glass Guild, and the owner of Glass Clown studio. He's also a member artist at ContraCommon, the Austin non-profit presenting the workshop. He likes to joke that he shares nearly 50% of his DNA with mushrooms, and he spends as much time eating them as he does recreating them in art glass.
