Silo Road and Armadillo Road are playing The White Horse on Sunday, August 16. It's a double bill of live music, and the night doesn't stop at the stage: there are two-step lessons and dancing on the floor, so you can learn the steps and then put them to use while the bands are playing.
If you're not already familiar, The White Horse is a honky-tonk on Comal Street that opened in December 2011 and helped expand the Eastside music scene. It's run by Nathan Hill and Denis O'Donnell, who brought over the residency model they used during their days managing the Hole in the Wall to break modern outlaw country acts like Mike & the Moonpies and Leo Rondeau. Sundays have long belonged to Eastside institution Conjunto Los Pinkys, so the room is well-versed in the Sunday tradition. The stage is set low, and on busy nights the dance floor fills up with a multi-generational crowd that can make it tough to see the singer, but that's part of the draw—even from the cheap seats, you're right in the middle of it.
Between the two bands, the lessons, and the dancing, there's plenty to do throughout the evening. The music runs from 6 PM to 1 AM, so you've got a long window to work with. If you've never two-stepped before, the lessons are a good place to start; if you've already got the hang of it, you can head straight for the floor. Either way, the night is built around the dancing as much as the music.
