Sewing: Plain and Fancy is an introductory hand-sewing workshop at Pioneer Farms on Sunday, August 9, 2026. It's designed for beginners, framing sewing as a time-honoured craft—a staple of past generations and a hobby for many today. The session is taught in the farm's historic textile room, and they provide the materials, so you don't need to bring your own kit to get started.
The workshop moves at a fast pace, running through stitches, patterns, and techniques in a single morning. It's an introductory class, so it's built for people who have never picked up a needle or those who know a few basics and want to fill in the gaps. Between the lessons, there's an Old Texas atmosphere added for free, which comes from the setting itself.
Pioneer Farms is a living history museum, staffed entirely by volunteers and run by a Board of Governors that oversees operations for the Heritage Society. Most of its funding comes from gate admissions and donations. Recently, the site has added a new entrance village, new programs and events, and brought historic buildings up to standard, with the goal of becoming a destination museum in Texas. The textile room where the workshop takes place is part of that preserved history.
