Raas Leela: An East Side Story

Agni Foundation for the Arts and Agni Katha bring Raas Leela: An East Side Story to The Long Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, August 21, at 7:30 PM. It's a Bollywood musical that pulls together dance, theater, music and storytelling, with 130 performers and 12 choreographers on stage. The show is built around nine dance pieces that move through classical, folk and contemporary styles.

The story is set in the fictional city of Vrindapur, which reimagines the emotional ground of classic Western love stories through a South Asian lens. It follows Ram and Leela, two young lovers caught between the powerful and opposing Kothari and Rathod families. The plot works with themes of forbidden love, family rivalry and generational conflict, and it's as much about community, legacy, pride and the choices that shape generations as it is about the romance itself.

Vrindapur ends up as a character in its own right, brought to life by the ensemble of dancers who shift between celebration, chaos, conflict and memory. The scale of the production is one of its defining features: 130 performers on stage at once, with the nine dance pieces spanning different styles rather than sticking to one. The show is presented by Agni Foundation for the Arts and Agni Katha.
