Performa/Dance brings Bluegrass Junction back to the live stage at AustinVentures StudioTheater on August 14 and 15. It's a short run—three performances only—so you'll want to pick your night early.
Choreographer Jennifer Hart is the one behind the piece, and she's bringing in singer-songwriter Tim Eriksen and Wayside Bluegrass to provide the music. The two work together on stage, with the dance and the bluegrass playing off each other rather than one just backing the other. Hart describes the piece as a heartfelt intersection of music and dance, and that's a good way to think about it: the movement and the sound are given equal weight.
The work looks back at a specific part of Americana—a time when live music and dance were how communities came together to mark the human experience and the different phases of a life. It's that kind of social, shared tradition that the piece is built around, and having live musicians on stage keeps it rooted in that live, communal feeling.

There are three shows in total, and the Saturday ones have a few extra options. Friday is at 7:30 PM. Saturday has a 4:30 PM matinee that's ASL-interpreted, and a 7:30 PM evening show with audio description available. Tickets run from $35 to $55. The venue is the AustinVentures StudioTheater at Ballet Austin, 501 W 3rd St.
