Ballet Folklórico de Austin presents a tribute to ancestors with traditional dances from the eight regions of Oaxaca, inviting attendees to contribute to an onstage ofrenda.
Ballet Folklórico de Austin brings a Día de Muertos performance to The Long Center on Sunday, November 1, at 5 PM. The show is a tribute to ancestors, and the dancing comes from all eight regions of Oaxaca, the cultural heart of Mexico. It's a broad look at one state's traditions rather than a single style, and the group frames it as a reminder that in Mexico, the dead are always celebrated and remembered.
There's a participatory part to the evening, too. Before the show starts, you're invited to bring a photo of a loved one who has passed or a favorite object to add to an onstage ofrenda. It's a way to bring your own family into the room before the dancing begins.

Since the performance is hosted at The Long Center as a venue rental for an independent organization, there's a bit of a pre-show setup if you want to arrive early. The Member Lounge is open before the show with complimentary snacks, a private bar, and views of the Austin skyline. If you're planning to bring the kids, keep in mind that all patrons, regardless of age, require a ticket. The performance starts at 5 PM on Sunday, November 1, at The Long Center.
