Book discussion with author Pamela Ellen Ferguson about her book on PTSD/PTSI, with the author in person.
Pamela Ellen Ferguson will be at BookWoman on Sunday, July 19, for a discussion of her book, From Hell to Health: Journeys Through PTSD/PTSI. She co-edited the collection with Randall Burks Sexton, and she'll be there in person to talk through it.
The book is a global look at post-traumatic stress disorder, and it does something specific with the terminology: it uses both PTSD and PTSI. The 'I' stands for injury, and the authors use the two terms to describe the same set of symptoms. The core of the book is a collection of stories from survivors in a dozen different countries, so it's less of a clinical manual and more of a wide-angle view of how people experience and live with this across different cultures. Along the way, it offers a fresh look at the therapies used to treat it.
Because the book is built around those personal accounts, the discussion is open to a few different crowds. The organizers invite anyone grappling with PTSD or PTSI themselves, as well as practitioners who treat clients with the condition. If you've spent any time thinking about trauma—either from a personal place or a professional one—this is the kind of conversation that actually puts a human face on the subject rather than just talking about it in the abstract.
