Grand opening of the Ostillo Art Foundation with its inaugural exhibition 'Masquerade' in the historic Rosewood neighbourhood of East Austin.
OSTILLO opens its doors in the Rosewood neighborhood of East Austin on Saturday, September 19, with a grand opening from 6 to 9 PM. It's a new collector-led art foundation, and the whole point is to expand public access to contemporary art, ideas, and cultural programming. The venue itself does a few things at once: it's an exhibition gallery, a public library, and an open-air performance area. That outdoor space is also going to be the permanent home of the East Side Kings Festival.
The opening introduces the full OSTILLO experience and debuts the foundation's first show, Masquerade, which looks at the image of the mask across contemporary artistic practices. It's a broad mix of painting, assemblage, sculpture, and photography, and it includes James Baldwin's Writer (1963), a gelatin silver print. The show is the first of many the foundation plans to host, and since the gallery is just one part of the building, you can move from the exhibition into the library or out to the performance area during the same visit.
