Milwood Movie Night: My Blue Heaven (1990)

Austin Public Library Milwood Branch is screening My Blue Heaven (1990) on Tuesday, July 28, as part of the Milwood Movie Night series. The screening is presented by Derrick Riches and runs from 6 PM to 8 PM.

If you're not familiar with the movie, it's Nora Ephron's comedy of errors, and it shares a pretty unusual origin story with another film from the same year. Both My Blue Heaven and Martin Scorsese's Wiseguys (1990) were adapted from the same source material: Nicholas Pileggi's book Wiseguys. That book tells the true story of Henry Hill of the Lucchese crime family, who became a state's witness and helped take down one of the largest crime syndicates in America. At the time Pileggi wrote the book, he was married to Ephron, who took the same story and reimagined it as a farce. Steve Martin plays a very loose version of Hill—a mobster adjusting to life in suburbia while in the FBI's witness protection program. It's a far cry from the crime drama Scorsese was making from the same pages.

The screening runs about two hours, so you'll be in and out in one evening. Registration isn't required to attend, which makes it an easy one to drop into without planning too far ahead.
