AFS Cinema is bringing Mikey and Nicky back to the big screen this weekend, starting Friday, July 24. It's a 1976 film directed by Elaine May, and this run is showing a new 4K restoration. There are three screenings to choose from: Friday at 7 PM, Saturday at 4:15 PM, and Sunday at 1 PM. The movie runs an hour and 59 minutes.
If you haven't seen it, Mikey and Nicky is a tragic story of friendship and betrayal between two old pals played by Peter Falk and John Cassavetes. The two were real-life buddies, and their chemistry carries the film far beyond its witty dialogue. Critics have called it a vivid, almost sensually rancid slice of 1970s cinema, with Cassavetes and Falk riffing like two great jazz musicians on a score. Seeing it in a 4K restoration gives it a fresh look it hasn't had in years.
The screenings are presented by AFS Cinema, the hub of the Austin Film Society. Richard Linklater founded the society in 1985 with a mission to empower the community to make, watch, and love film and creative media. It's one of those things that's a bit more than just a movie theater—it's part of the city's wider film culture.

Tickets are $14 for evening shows and $11.50 for matinees, which are available Monday through Friday for shows before 5 PM. AFS MAKE & WATCH members get $4 off, and LOVE & Impact Circle members see it for free.
