Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy and Friends perform R.E.M.'s album Document live at ACL Live.
Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy are bringing their R.E.M. project to ACL Live at The Moody Theater on Monday, May 3, 2027. They'll be playing Document in its entirety, the 1987 album that saw the band shift toward a louder, more direct sound.
If those names sound like they belong in different worlds, it's because they do. Shannon is an award-winning actor and director; Narducy is a musician whose resume includes the Bob Mould Band, Superchunk, Sunny Day Real Estate, Verböten, and Split Single. The two have been collaborating for about thirteen years, playing through entire albums by artists like Neil Young, The Modern Lovers, Bob Dylan, The Smiths, and T. Rex in Chicago clubs. What started as a one-off show in July 2023 at Chicago's Metro—honouring the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.'s Murmur with R.E.M.'s own Mike Mills as a guest—grew into their first-ever tour.
Since then, they've toured through Fables of the Reconstruction (1985) and Life's Rich Pageant (1986). Document is the next in line. Shannon calls it the album that first introduced him to the band, and Narducy remembers buying it as a teenager and feeling a deep connection to "Finest Worksong."
