Meet Austin artist Marcus Delzell at the Unchained.Art Contemporary Gallery for the first 'Austin Artist of the Month' hands-on session.
Marcus Delzell is at Unchained.Art Contemporary Gallery on Sunday, September 6, from 12 PM to 4 PM. He's the first artist to kick off the gallery's new Austin Artist of the Month program, and this is the day you can actually meet him in person. The exhibition itself runs for a full month, so if you can't make the Sunday, you've still got time to see the work on your own.
The program is a pretty specific setup: each month, Unchained.Art invites an Austin artist from outside their represented roster to co-curate a dedicated wall and present a month-long mini exhibition, which then wraps up with a hands-on first Sunday. Delzell is the first one through the door. He's a multidisciplinary artist working across oil painting, drawing, video, and theatre, and his compositions look at identity, perception, and the tension between authenticity and performance. He draws on Greek mythology and the metaphor of the mask to examine the human psyche and the narratives we impose on ourselves and others. A few of the paper-based drawings on the wall are being shown publicly for the first time, so there's some new material to see.
