AFS Cinema is screening Mike Leigh's Meantime on Sunday, August 16, at 7 PM, and again on Wednesday, August 19, at 8 PM. The film is a 1983 comedy-drama, 112 minutes long, set in Thatcher's England. It follows two brothers on the dole living in public housing: Colin, played by a young Tim Roth, shy and withdrawn; and Mark, played by Quadrophenia star Phil Daniels, perpetually angry. An upwardly mobile aunt and uncle and a skinhead played by a breakout Gary Oldman offer them competing lifestyles to define themselves by.
Leigh is known for building his characters from an amalgam of people he knows, a process he described in a Vanity Fair interview. The Criterion Channel calls him "the great prickly humanist of British cinema," and a Slant review named Meantime an early standout from "the great chronicler of the British underclass." The AFS presentation pairs the screening with a post-film discussion and a pop-up shop.
