New York-based singer-songwriter Margaret Glaspy performs live at The 04 Center with special guest Olive Klug.
Margaret Glaspy plays The 04 Center on Friday, November 20, from 8 PM to 10:30 PM. She's a New York-based singer-songwriter who grew up in Northern California and made her debut with the acclaimed 2016 album Emotions and Math. This is her fourth full-length record, I Am Both, which followed 2023's Echo the Diamond.
I Am Both was produced by three-time Grammy winner Joe Henry, whom she first connected with at a T Bone Burnett-curated Bob Dylan tribute at New York's Town Hall in 2022. The album was recorded live over three days at Reservoir Studios with drummer and percussionist Jay Bellerose, keyboardist Patrick Warren, and bassist Ross Gallagher. Its eleven tracks came after Glaspy stepped away from social media to write lyrics in longhand and polish them on a typewriter. The result is described as a folk-leaning indie-rock work carried by her direct vocals and guitar playing.
If you've been following her since Emotions and Math, you've seen her move through several records, and I Am Both is the latest chapter in that. The way it came together—recorded live in a studio over three days rather than pieced together track by track—gives the songs a specific kind of room to breathe. The longhand writing and the typewriter work their way into the lyrics, too, and you can hear that focus on the page in the songs themselves. It's a folk-leaning indie-rock record, and the whole thing is held up by her vocals and her guitar.
