Los Skarnales play Flamingo Cantina on Friday, September 18, with Rat King Cole and Chiconmal joining them on the bill. It's a full night of music on Sixth Street, and the lineup brings together three acts instead of just one.
Los Skarnales describe their sound as a fusion of danzón, cumbia, reggae, ska, and cantina music, all played with a punk attitude. That's a lot of ground to cover in one set—the slow, elegant sway of danzón, the danceable beat of cumbia, the offbeat rhythms of reggae and ska, and the grit of cantina music, all held together by a punk energy that keeps it from feeling like a museum piece. It's the kind of mix that works best when you're actually there, where the different styles can bleed into one another over the course of the night.
They're sharing the stage with Rat King Cole and Chiconmal, so the bill is a triple header rather than a single headliner. The whole thing fits right in at Flamingo Cantina, which has been an Austin landmark since 1991. For more than 33 years, it's been known as the city's go-to spot for 'good vibes music' and a defining piece of the Sixth Street scene. The room has hosted a wide run of live reggae, ska, Latin and worldbeat, as well as rock, hip hop and alternative, with a stage that's seen local, national and international artists ranging from Afro-Cuban musician Ricardo Lemvo and the Mahotella Queens to Burning Spear. The venue prides itself on its intimate atmosphere and on the 'good vibe' the artists say they feel from the audience, and the night is rounded off with Winston's jerk chicken.
