If you've never followed her, Mattea has spent over 35 years moving between country, bluegrass, and folk, and the numbers back up the run: two Grammy wins, four CMA Awards, four #1 country singles, and five gold albums, with a platinum Greatest Hits collection on top of that. The Washington Post called her one of Nashville's finest song interpreters, and that's a good way to think about her—she's known more for how she handles a song than for the specific genre she's in at any given moment.
Her latest record, Pretty Bird, was produced by roots music wizard Tim O'Brien, so it sits right in that country-folk-bluegrass intersection she's worked in for decades. Beyond recording and touring, she's spent recent years in public broadcasting: she contributed to Ken Burns' 2019 PBS documentary Country Music and took over from founder Larry Groce as host of the long-running NPR show Mountain Stage.
