Jolie Holland presents her album Haunted Mountain, with special guests Little Mazarn.
Jolie Holland plays The 04 Center on Saturday, October 24, with Austin's Little Mazarn opening. She's touring her new album, Haunted Mountain, which she released on October 6. It's a collection tied closely to collaborator Buck Meek's album of the same name, and the two co-wrote five of the songs on it. Holland's studio work is known for its sonic experiments—she's recorded everything from knuckles rapping on a piano to the chorus of cicadas—and the live set will bring those textures out of the studio.
Holland has built her following on the honesty of her life experiences, singing in a haunting, smokey voice about disaster capitalism, creeping fascism, colonialism, and patriarchal oppression. It's a heavy set of themes, and she doesn't shy away from them. The new record continues that streak, and the show is a chance to hear these songs performed live.
Opening the night is Little Mazarn, an Austin trio led by cellist Lindsey Verrill. Verrill left a seventeen-year teaching job and has recorded with Patty Griffin and Dana Falconberry; her bandmates include Jeff Johnston, who played in Bill Callahan's band, and Carolina Chauffe of project hemlock. Their album Mustang Island moves from primitive folk toward spacious sonic experimentation that draws on Southern outsider music. Between the two acts, the evening leans toward the textural and the experimental.
