John Cameron Mitchell attends the screening of his film Hedwig and the Angry Inch as part of the 25th Anniversary Movie Tour at Emo's.
John Cameron Mitchell brings his Hedwig and the Angry Inch 25th Anniversary Movie Tour to Emo's on Wednesday, August 5. It's a screening of the film, not a live stage production, so you'll be watching the movie in a room full of other people rather than seeing a live performance of the show. Mitchell wrote, directed, and starred in the original, and he's the one taking it back out on the road for this anniversary run.
For those who haven't caught it, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a rock musical about a gender-queer singer and songwriter who, after losing her band and her songs, builds her own life and music from the wreckage. It's as much about the music as it is about the story, and seeing it in a theater—especially at a place like Emo's—keeps that part front and center. The 25th anniversary marks a quarter-century since the story first hit the stage, and this tour is Mitchell's way of bringing it back around.
If you've seen the movie at home, there's something different about seeing it in a room with a crowd, and if you've only heard the songs, this is the best way to get the whole thing in one go. It's a single-night stop in Austin, so it's a one-shot deal if you want to catch it here.
