Book signing with comedian Joey Clift for his debut book on Native American culture, in conversation with Maxochitl Cortez.
Joey Clift is coming to BookPeople on Wednesday, November 11, at 7 PM to celebrate the release of We've Been Here The Whole Time! A Not So Sacred Guide to All Things Native America, his debut book. It's a book signing, but the main event is a conversation: Clift will be on stage with moderator Maxochitl Cortez, a queer Indigenous Resistance Artist, Educator and Community Organizer. The discussion runs about 45 to 60 minutes, and there's a signing line afterward.
Clift is an enrolled member of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and a Los Angeles-based comedian and writer, and that background is all over the book. He takes readers through Native history, people and culture, touching on misunderstood figures like Pocahontas, the Land Back movement, and names like Lily Gladstone. It's a broad look at the subject, and he approaches it with the same comedic eye he brings to his other work.
That work reaches across a few different worlds. He's a Peabody and Emmy nominee whose writing has appeared in The Washington Post, Pitchfork and NPR's All Things Considered. He's written for SXSW, Dead Meat and Dropoutโincluding the show Smartypantsโand worked on Spirit Rangers for Netflix. He also created Gone Native, a Webby Award-winning Comedy Central Digital series. This book is his first time putting that voice into a full-length volume.

The event is free and open to the public, with seating first-come, first-served on the second floor of BookPeople at 603 North Lamar Boulevard. There won't be a live stream or recording, so if you want to hear the conversation, you'll have to be there in person. It starts at 7 PM.
