James McMurtry plays The 04 Center on Saturday, November 14, at 8 PM. It's his first Austin show in a while, and he's touring The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy, the ten-song collection he released on June 20 via New West Records. It's his first album in four years, following 2021's The Horses and the Hounds.
McMurtry co-produced the record with Don Dixon, who's worked with R.E.M. and The Smithereens. The songs pull from his family history: the cover is a rough pencil sketch by Ken Kesey, and some of the writing looks at the hallucinations experienced by his father, the writer Larry McMurtry. Sarah Jarosz, Charlie Sexton, Bonnie Whitmore, and Bukka Allen all make appearances across the album, and McMurtry's backing band, The Martial Law Review, is on it too — Tim Holt on guitar and accordion, Cornbread on bass, and Daren Hess on drums.
