A conversation with climate fiction authors Deb Olin Unferth and Mary Helen Specht, discussing their novels 'Earth 7' and 'Mudlark', with Q&A and booksignings.
Deb Olin Unferth and Mary Helen Specht are coming together at the Austin Central Library on Wednesday, September 9, to talk about their new novels. Both are Austin writers, and both have just put out books that fit into the 'cli-fi'—climate fiction—genre: Unferth's Earth 7 and Specht's Mudlark. The evening is presented in collaboration with the Texas Book Festival and The Library Foundation.
Unferth is a veteran of the scene here. Earth 7 is her seventh book, following Barn 8 and Wait Till You See Me Dance. She's picked up a Guggenheim Fellowship and four Pushcart Prizes along the way, was a finalist for a National Book Critics Circle Award, and teaches at UT Austin. Specht is coming off Migratory Animals, which was a New York Times Editors' Choice and took home the Texas Institute of Letters Best First Fiction Award and the Writers' League of Texas Fiction Prize. She's also a Fulbright Scholar to Nigeria and a Dobie-Paisano Writing Fellow, and she teaches creative writing at St. Edward's.
The two will spend the evening in conversation, talking through their new novels and the climate fiction they both work in. After the talk, the floor opens up for a Q&A where you can ask them your own questions, and the night wraps with a book signing.
