Cumbia night with performances by Los Desechos and Los Sonificos, plus a free Cumbia dance class with Ela la Dancer.
Los Desechos are back at Hotel Vegas on Saturday, August 15, for another Cumbia Night. They're the resident house band for the series, and this one brings along Los Sonificos and DJ Flor de la Frontera. There's also a free Cumbia dance class with Ela la Dancer, so if you've never danced one before, you can get your footing before the music starts.
Los Desechos formed in early 2024 as an El Tule spinoff, fronted by John Dell of El Combo Oscuro and built around that band's local cumbia powerhouse. Their name loosely means 'The Outsiders,' and they describe their mission as reviving the feel-good original cumbias that played on 70s radio along the Texas-Mexico border. The sound pulls from psychedelic, chicha, sonidero, and surf influences, and their debut vinyl LP, Cumbias Levantamuertos, sold out. The Austin Chronicle called them an Austin supergroup.
The lineup is a full section: John Dell on guitar, David Dalton on keys, Jacob Rivera on bass, Eric Brown on drums, and Mateo Turner and Michael Penic on timbales. They've shared the stage with Sonora Dinamita, Sonido Gallo Negro, El Combo Oscuro, and Money Chicha at SXSW, Viva Big Bend, Houston's Cumbia Caravan, and San Antonio's Noche Cumbiambera.

It all goes down at Hotel Vegas & The Volstead Lounge in Austin, starting at 9 PM. Between the dance class, the live sets from Los Desechos and Los Sonificos, and DJ Flor de la Frontera keeping things moving, it's a full night of cumbia.
