An evening of hot jazz and swing music with social dancing, tap and Lindy hop performances, jazz poetry and a late DJ set at the historic Scottish Rite Theater.
The Relevators headline Hot Jazz Summer at the Scottish Rite Theater on Saturday, August 29, from 6 PM to 11 PM. It's a long evening of jazz and swing that runs from the early evening well into the night, with a full program that goes beyond just the main stage.
The night pairs The Relevators' jazz-age repertoire with the 10-piece Golden Hour Orchestra playing classic swing, both drawing on the local Austin jazz scene. Before the music starts, a beginner dance lesson called Floor on the Floor opens the floor, and pop-up tap and Lindy hop performances by Matty Owens and Rhythm Ramble Jazz Dance run alongside the sets. Jazz poetry by David 'Jelly Moe' Jellema fills the intermission, and DJ Shortystumpleton closes the night with a late set. In the lobby, Luke Allen and Shane Dickens play as a duo.
The Scottish Rite Theater is Austin's oldest theater, sitting just south of the UT campus on 18th Street. It has wood floors that invite dancing and comfortable chairs for those who prefer to sit, so you can move around or stay put throughout the night. The evening is supported in part by Austin Arts, Culture, Music, and Entertainment.
