Live performance by the country jazz trio Hot Club of Cowtown, with special guests The Louisiana Surf Department, at the historic The Continental Club.
Hot Club of Cowtown play The Continental Club on Wednesday, October 14, with The Louisiana Surf Department opening. It's part of the club's long-running Wednesday night residency, which sits alongside Dale Watson on Mondays and Heybale on Sundays—three honky-tonk and Western swing nights that bring in serious dancers to a dark, intimate room where the floor doubles as standing room and dance floor.
Hot Club of Cowtown has been building its reputation since the late 1990s on jaw-dropping virtuosity and exuberant live shows. The Times of London described their sound as "down-home melodies and exuberant improvisation," while The Independent put the trio "at that crossroads where country meets jazz and chases the blues away," always with the sense that the music is above all for dancing and an old-fashioned good time. Critics have called them "a pretty much perfect country trio at the very top of their game" and armed with "an arsenal full of technique and joy."
The venue itself is a City of Austin historic landmark. It opened in 1955 as a private supper club, later served as the city's first burlesque club, and at one point was a blue-collar bar that opened at 7 AM. These Wednesday nights are one of the club's steady fixtures, and the dance floor is usually full.
