A lecture, live quilt-painting demonstration and hands-on fabric painting activity with local artists Annette Kennedy and Sherri Lipman McCauley.
Hands-on Activities with the Artists! is at the Old Bakery and Emporium on Saturday, October 3, from 12:30 to 2:30 PM. It's a fabric painting workshop that lets you work alongside the artists behind the current show in the gallery.
The session is part of Wild and Woven: Two Perspectives in Contemporary Art Quilting, an exhibition running from August 22 to October 26 in the Old Bakery's Fine Art Gallery. The show puts two different ways of working with paint on fabric side by side: Annette Kennedy's realism and Sherri Lipman McCauley's abstraction. Both artists work in the same medium, but they take it in opposite directions. The workshop follows that same thread, starting with a lecture and a live quilt-painting demonstration before moving into the hands-on fabric painting activity itself. You'll get to see how they approach the craft and then try it out yourself.
The venue is the Old Bakery and Emporium at 1006 Congress Avenue, a downtown landmark built in 1876 by immigrants and home to the city's first bakery. Today it houses a consignment store and a fine arts gallery for artists over 50, and it keeps the city's immigrant history alive through the Lundberg-Maerki Historical Collection. The building's first mural, Generational Ties by local artist Ruben Esquivel, was painted in 2026 and blends Indigenous and Swedish heritage.
