A borderless celebration of culture and resistance featuring music, art, food and spoken word, with performances by Viva Palestina Orchestra and others.
Free Falasteen Fest II: Sin Fronteras takes over Radio/East on Sunday, October 25, from 2 PM to 10 PM. The Viva Palestina Orchestra is the main feature, and they're joined by Javier Jara, Caravan Stange and Los Fandangueros de Austin. It's a full day of music and spoken word, and the lineup pulls from a few different traditions.
The festival is organized by the Viva Palestina Orchestra, and they describe it as a borderless celebration of the cultures within the community that fight oppression and unite in resistance through art, music and spoken word. It's dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Palestinian and oppressed cultures around the world. The VPO says they're committed to turning cultural engagement into global impact by supporting partner organizations and uplifting those facing injustice in Austin and beyond. The gathering is supported in part by an Elevate Grant.
Beyond the music and spoken word, the day includes art, food and vendors. The festival is part of the programming of Julie Slim, a Lebanese-Palestinian-American jazz vocalist based in Austin who performs with her band RendezVous, bridging cultures through a blend of French chanson, American jazz and Middle Eastern rhythms.
