It's a book talk in the truest sense: Buxton reads a snippet of the book and then provides some context around it, so you get to hear the prose and the thinking behind it in the same room.
Daytona Teddy Riggs is a humorous, satirical ride through masculinity, obsession, the self-help industry, and mental illness. The protagonist is Teddy Riggs, known in Corpus Christi as Daytona, a strongman training to win the World's Strongest Man competition. He's guided by the tapes of self-help guru Pat Dupree, and while the story follows that ambition, what unfolds goes well beyond the muscle. If you've ever looked at the world of self-improvement and thought it sounded a bit like a cult, this is right in that wheelhouse.
The evening doesn't stop with the reading. The room is rounded out with music inspired by the novel by Get Along, the outfit of Tex-electric country artist Nick Garza. So you get the book, the author talking through it, and a live set that pulls from the same world.
