A free afternoon jazz workshop and jam session for young musicians with the Double Vision Jazz Ensemble at Batch.
Double Vision are hosting a youth jazz workshop and jam session at Batch Craft Beer & Kolaches on Sunday, August 9, from 2:00 to 3:45 PM. It's a free afternoon for young musicians to get on stage with a working quartet, and it's open to high school jazz students, youth jazz orchestra members, and young improvisers. The session is run by the H Project Performing Arts Association in partnership with the Austin Jazz Society, and it's supported in part by an Elevate Grant from Austin Arts, Culture, Music, & Entertainment.
The workshop is led by the Double Vision Jazz Ensemble, a contemporary jazz quartet co-led by composers and improvisers Hank Hehmsoth and John Mills, whose musical relationship goes back roughly half a century. The full lineup for the day is Hehmsoth on piano and Nord Stage 4, Mills on saxophone and woodwinds, Utah Hamrick on bass, and Aaron Easley on drums. They'll be working with the students on the practical side of the jam session: listening, taking turns, following forms, and interacting with a rhythm section in a supportive setting. Students are encouraged to bring their instruments.
It's not just a closed lesson, though. Parents, educators, and visitors are invited to watch, so the afternoon functions as a window into Austin's youth jazz community rather than just a class. The session is part of HPPAA's Elevate-supported Double Vision Jazz Ensemble series, a program of public jazz and arts events aimed at expanding access to live music and creative learning across the city.
