Honky-tonk dance lessons and live music at Sagebrush, taught by the popular Austin dance school Double or Nothing Two-Step.
Double or Nothing Two-Step holds its weekly honky-tonk dance lessons at Sagebrush, 5500 S Congress Ave, with a beginner class at 6 PM and an intermediate one at 7 PM every Tuesday. If you're looking for something on a different night, they also run a free beginner class at Donn's Depot, 1600 W 5th St, on Wednesdays at 7 PM, and a Sunday session back at Sagebrush with advanced lessons at 5 PM and intermediate at 6 PM. The Tuesday and Sunday classes cost $10 cash at the door.
Double or Nothing is Austin's go-to honky-tonk dance school, and Texas Monthly has called it the city's most popular provider of country-dance lessons. They teach the local style: a fast, smooth social two-step that evolved to fit crowded honky-tonk floors, starting slow and blending swing-dance turns into a compact frame. It's the kind of dance that works in a packed room without needing a lot of space to move.
Much of the credit for the revival of two-stepping among Austin's younger crowd goes to this school, which has taught more than 50,000 people since 2020. The lessons rotate partners, so solo dancers, couples, and groups are all welcome, and first-timers usually leave dancing the same night. Beyond these weekly bar sessions, they offer multi-week studio classes, private one-on-one lessons, and an online course for anyone outside Austin. They also supply country dancers for film, TV, and commercials. The school has been named Best Two-Stepping Lessons in the Austin Chronicle's Best of Austin and featured in Garden & Gun, Tribeza, and Austin Monthly.
