Community Contra Dance

Community Contra Dance is back at Hancock Recreation Center on Wednesday, August 27, as part of its weekly series. If you've never done contra, it's a folk dance where you move in long lines with other couples, switching partners as you go. It's social, high-energy, and—most importantly—completely beginner-friendly. You don't need a partner to join in, and you don't need to know a single step before you walk through the door.

That's because every dance is taught and called. The evening starts with a basic lesson at 7:15 PM, and the dancing kicks off at 7:30 PM. Each week focuses on a featured move, with the basics laid out first and then some extra tips on nuances and variations for those who want to dig a bit deeper. Once the music starts, the callers walk you through the figures in real time, so you can just follow along and dance without having to memorize anything.

On the music side, the Local On-Call Orchestra (LOCO) provides the live sound that keeps the whole thing moving. The session is all-ages, sober, and family-friendly, and it's built to be welcoming to newcomers and LGBTQ+ dancers alike. The callers use gender-neutral calls, and the whole vibe is about getting people on the floor rather than showing off.
