Concert by Chris Smither, a prominent figure in acoustic blues and folk music, with special guest Chris Brokaw at The 04 Center.
Chris Smither plays The 04 Center on Saturday, October 10, with special guest Chris Brokaw. Smither is a figure of acoustic folk and blues, and this is a headlining bill with Brokaw opening.
Smither's style is built on beat-driven finger-picking, influenced by Mississippi John Hurt and Lightnin' Hopkins, layered over the backbeat of his mic'd tapping feet. He was born in Miami during World War II and raised in New Orleans, and he first took up music as a child, taught the basics of instrumentation by his uncle, Howard. He turned to acoustic blues, inspired by Lightnin' Hopkins, and in his early twenties moved to Boston at the urging of folk singer Eric von Schmidt, where he forged lifelong friendships with artists like Bonnie Raitt, who recorded his songs "Love You Like A Man" and "I Feel the Same."
His first albums, I'm A Stranger, Too! (1971) and Don't It Drag On (1972), came out on Poppy Records, the same label as Townes Van Zandt. He has since released over 20 records, including the 2014 double-CD retrospective Still on the Levee and the 2024 release All About the Bones. His songs have been covered by Diana Krall, Emmylou Harris, and B.B. King.
