Chicken Shit Bingo is back at The Little Longhorn Saloon this Sunday, July 26, from 4 to 8 PM. It's one of those Austin traditions that's hard to explain until you're actually there: a chicken is placed on a numbered grid, and it picks its own winning square by pooping on a number. The band calls the number, and the winners head up on stage to collect. These days, a second chicken has joined in, so there's more than one bird working the grid.
The crowd doesn't just watch, either. People cheer and make animal noises to encourage the bird, and the prize changes from week to week. A lot of people show up for the spectacle rather than the winnings, and it's a scene that's caught the attention of more than a few: The Daily Texan's award-winning video department has covered it, and PBS's Wild Travels devoted a whole episode to a Chicken Shit Sunday.
The Little Longhorn Saloon calls itself Austin's original home of Chicken Shit Bingo, a tradition more than 50 years in the making. It's also been at the center of the city's honky-tonk scene for over four decades, with no cover charge and live music six nights a week—more than ten bands weekly and over 600 a year. When the bingo isn't the main event, the place is known for its world-famous Micheladas and homemade Bloody Marys.
