A bystander intervention training session led by ADL and Shalom-Austin to help residents recognise and respond to identity-based harassment, part of the Austin Against Hate initiative.
Bystander Intervention Training: Stop Jewish Hate! We All Belong is coming to the Ruiz Branch Library on Thursday, September 3, from 1 PM to 2:30 PM. It's a virtual session, so you can join from home. The training is led by the ADL and Shalom-Austin, and it's part of the city's 'We All Belong - Austin Against Hate' initiative.
The session is designed to give you practical tools to recognize, disrupt, and safely respond to identity-based harassment. The goal is to turn passive witnesses into confident upstanders—people who know how to step in when they see something wrong rather than just watching it happen. It's not about theory; it's about what to actually do in the moment.
To get some context on where this fits in: the 'We All Belong' campaign is run by the Human Rights Division within the City of Austin's Office of Equity and Inclusion. The division launched in March 2025 under City Manager T.C. Broadnax and focuses on underserved communities, including immigrants and refugees, LGBTQIA+ residents, people with disabilities, veterans, and justice-impacted individuals. As part of the campaign, the city also offers up to $1,500 in sponsorships for community-led events that bring people together and help prevent hate.
