Classics Book Club discussion of 'Brave New World' by Aldous Huxley at the Milwood branch of the Austin Public Library.
Aldous Huxley's Brave New World is the focus of the Austin Public Library Milwood Branch's Classics Book Club on Tuesday, September 15. The discussion runs from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Milwood branch, located at 12500 Amherst Drive. Derrick Riches is organizing the session, and it's free to attend.
If you've never read it, Brave New World is a dystopian novel set in a future where children are manufactured in labs, drugs are used to control moods, and everyone knows their place from the start. Distraction is the primary tool to keep people from questioning how things work. It's nearly a century old now, and it predates George Orwell's 1984 by more than fifteen years. Huxley wrote it before the Second World War, in a world of rampant capitalism and consumerism where society is stratified by intelligence and technocrats are in charge.
As one of the great classic dystopias, it remains strikingly prescient. Its science-fiction vision—the engineered babies, the mood-altering drugs, the constant noise and distraction—often feels more familiar today than Orwell's vision of a surveillance state. The book asks what happens to a society that trades its freedom for comfort and stability, and whether a life without pain is actually a life worth living.
