35th anniversary screening of the film Boyz n the Hood, directed by John Singleton, at Paramount and Stateside Theatres as part of the Paramount Summer Classic Film Series.
Boyz n the Hood is coming to The State Theatre on Thursday, August 20, as part of the 51st Annual Paramount Summer Classic Film Series presented by Capital Metro. It's a 35th anniversary screening of the 1991 drama, which runs 112 minutes in color and will be shown from a DCP. The film was the debut of John Singleton, who earned an Oscar nomination for it.
Singleton's story is set in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood and follows Tre's attempts to build a better life in a world where a trip to the store can end in death. It's an intensely dramatic look at the environment Tre is trying to navigate, and the cast is one of the most recognizable of its era: Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut, Angela Bassett, Nia Long, Regina King, and Lawrence Fishburne.
The screening takes place at The State Theatre, which sits right next to the Paramount on Congress Avenue. Both are run by The Austin Theatre Alliance, a 501(c)(3) non-profit. The Paramount itself has stood on Congress for over a century—built in 1915, it's Austin's oldest surviving theatre, a City of Austin, State, and National Register of Historic Places landmark, and one of the few remaining 'hemp houses' in America. It hosts the city's red-carpet film premieres, forms part of SXSW and the Austin Film Festival, and is home to the Moontower Comedy Festival.
