The Boneshakers bring blues, soul and rock to the stage, joined by Austin blues legend Malford Milligan.
The Boneshakers play The Saxon Pub on Sunday, August 16, with Austin's own Malford Milligan joining them as a special guest. It's a blues, soul, and rock bill that brings together a band with deep roots in Detroit and a vocalist who's spent years as one of the city's most recognizable voices.
The Boneshakers are led by Detroit guitarist Randy Jacobs, who co-wrote the Was (Not Was) hit "Walk the Dinosaur" and has played alongside Bonnie Raitt, BB King, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Kelly. The band's history goes back to 1980, when Jacobs met soul legend Sweetpea Atkinson during a session for brothers Don and David Was. They signed to Pointblank/Virgin in 1996, released two albums, and built an international following from there. Sax star Mindi Abair joined in 2015, and Virginia Blues Hall of Fame inductee Jenny Langer took over on vocals in 2022. Their 2023 album One Foot In The Groove hit number one on both the UK Blues and US Soul Blues charts, and their 2025 release Live To Be This debuted at number nine on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart.
Malford Milligan is an eight-time Austin Music Award winner for Best Vocalist, often called "The Voice of Austin." He fronted Storyville and played in the band from 2001 to 2003, so he's a familiar presence on the local scene. He'll be appearing as a special guest for the show.
