Barfield, The Tyrant

Barfield, The Tyrant are playing The Continental Club this Thursday, August 6, as part of the venue's Thursday night run. The show starts at 10:30 PM, so it's a late one—the kind of night that works if you're not planning on an early morning on Friday.

If you haven't caught them before, the band describes their sound as a funky, garage-soul stew that pulls from Johnny Cash, The Clash, James Brown, and Screamin' Jay Hawkins. It's a wide reach—country, punk, soul, and R&B all in one set—and they're known for being a spectacle live. The members are all mainstays of Austin's country, blues, soul, and rock'n'roll scenes, so they're coming from a few different corners of the city's music world and bringing them together on one stage.

They're playing at The Continental Club, a South Congress landmark that's been around since 1955. It started as a swanky supper club, spent some time as Austin's first burlesque club, and later became a blue-collar bar that opened every morning at 7 AM. By the late '70s and early '80s, it had grown into one of the city's premier live music venues, with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Joe Ely, and Bill Carter among the acts that played there. It was renovated in 1987 to look like its original 1950s version, and it's still a hub for roots rock, traditional country, blues, rockabilly, and garage rock.
