Artists Cristina Velásquez, Quentin Pace and Yamin Li discuss their works on view at the Julia C. Butridge Gallery in a free public talk.
Cristina Velásquez, Quentin Pace, and Yamin Li are coming together for an artist talk at the Dougherty Arts Center on Wednesday, September 30, from 7 PM to 9 PM. The three of them have separate shows on view right now at the Julia C. Butridge Gallery, and this is the one night they'll all be in the same room talking about them at once. It's free and open to the public.
Velásquez works with photography, text, and archival intervention, pulling from her perspective as a Colombian woman and mother living in Austin to look at memory, identity, and personal mythology. Pace works in abstraction, using color and symbolism to map emotion and the threads that connect us. Li's paintings examine identity, belonging, and the experience of navigating between different cultures and places. Each of them is coming at identity from a different angle—one through family and archive, one through abstract emotion, and one through the feeling of being between worlds.
During the talk, they'll go into the concepts, materials, and personal experiences that went into their exhibitions. Since their work is all hanging in the same gallery, it's a good chance to hear them talk through their processes side by side and see how those different approaches to identity and belonging play off one another. If you've already spent some time with the shows, this is the part where you get to hear the stories behind the work.
